The Geneva Conventions form the foundation of International Humanitarian Law, establishing the rules of armed conflict and the protection of civilians, prisoners and aid workers. Use the resources below to deepen your understanding.
Geneva Convention I
Geneva Convention I protects wounded and sick soldiers on land during armed conflict, and establishes the protected status of medical personnel, facilities and the Red Cross emblem.
Geneva Convention IV
Geneva Convention IV protects civilians in times of war, including those living under occupation, establishing rules on their treatment, internment and the obligations of occupying powers.
Additional Protocol III
Protocol III introduces the Red Crystal as an additional protected emblem alongside the Red Cross and Red Crescent, allowing its use by national societies in countries where the existing emblems are problematic.
Geneva Convention II
Geneva Convention II extends the same protections as Convention I but applies to wounded, sick and shipwrecked military personnel at sea, and protects hospital ships.
Additional Protocol I
Protocol I extends and strengthens the protections of the Geneva Conventions in international armed conflicts, including stronger protections for civilians from attack and expanded rights for combatants.
Geneva Convention III
Geneva Convention III establishes the rights and protections of prisoners of war, covering their treatment, living conditions, and the obligations of detaining powers.
Additional Protocol II
Protocol II extends humanitarian protections to victims of non-international armed conflicts such as civil wars, covering the treatment of civilians, wounded, sick and detained persons.
Droit islamique et droit international humanitaire – CICR
Le droit islamique est le socle de l’islam et l’un des trois plus importants systèmes juridiques en vigueur aujourd’hui dans le monde. En raison de ses caractéristiques uniques, certaines parties à des conflits armés continuent à l’invoquer comme source principale des règles régissant leur comportement dans un conflit armé. Les ressemblances entre les principes qui sous-tendent le Droit International Humanitaire (DIH) et le droit islamique de la guerre permettent de penser que ces deux traditions juridiques visent les mêmes objectifs. Il est essentiel de promouvoir l’universalité de ces principes, qui transcendent traditions juridiques, cultures et civilisations, si l’on veut faire en sorte que le DIH soit respecté.
Le cadre juridique de l’accès humanitaire dans les conflits armés (Revue internationale de la Croix-Rouge)
Obtenir et maintenir l’accès des acteurs humanitaires aux populations ayant besoin d’aide représente un défi. Il existe en effet toutes sortes d’obstacles à l’accès humanitaire : hostilités en cours, climat d’insécurité, lourdeur fréquente des procédures administratives ou tentatives des parties aux conflits armés pour empêcher l’accès humanitaire. Ces difficultés sont souvent aggravées par la connaissance insuffisante qu’ont les États, les groupes armés non étatiques et les organisations humanitaires du cadre juridique. Le présent article a avant tout pour objet de présenter le cadre juridique international qui régit actuellement l’accès humanitaire dans les situations de conflit armé.
